Dear Reader,
The Hope Street mysteries were originally published by St. Martin’s Press and written under the name Jennifer Stanley. The titles, in order, were Stirring Up Strife, Path of the Wicked, and The Way of the Guilty.
I have completely rewritten all three novels and am now publishing them under the name Ellery Adams as The Path of the Crooked, The Way of the Wicked, and The Graves of the Guilty.
If you’ve read the original books, you will find the basic plot of the above titles unchanged. My intention was to polish the writing in each installment and rerelease the novels as crisper, cleaner, more engaging books. Stay tuned for forthcoming novels in the Hope Street mystery series as well.

Hmm. I don't know what to make of this book. First, I want to say that I'm a huge fan of Ellery Adams. I love her Books By the Bay, the Charmed Pie Shoppe series, and the first book in her new Mystery Suite series. But this book is full of stereotypes: the glossy, bossy sister, the sort of working class mentality in writing the people, as if to be religious they have to be of that class. I'm slogging my way through because the mystery captivates me, but I may just peek at the end and see who done it and put it away. Sad because I was so looking forward to a new book by this author.Product details

I enjoyed the Bible references and reliance on prayer throughout this book. I thought it could have had a little more depth to the plot. Simple read and would probably recommend to Christians who want to avoid a more intense mystery with blood and gore involved. It was a book that I could put down and start again later. I happen to like the nail biting mystery that you want to read straight through.
Jennifer Stanley's "Stirring Up Strife" is a well-plotted and well-written mystery that is as fun to read for the subplots and it is for the central "whodunit" puzzle. The premise is this Cooper Lee, an unlikely female office machine repair technician, has a chance encounter with a client whose jammed copy machine Lee is called in to repair. That client, Brooke Hughes, has an instant connection with Cooper and invites her to attend Bible study sessions at Hope Street Church. Cooper, feeling down and out after recently breaking up with her longtime boyfriend Drew and moving back in with her parents, could use a little light in her life, so she decides to visit Hope Street.
The Bible study is all aflutter when Lee arrives, as it seems one of their beloved church members, Wesley Hughes, has been arrested for the murder of his wife, Brooke! Cooper and members of the Bible study, who know Wesley and cannot imagine his having committed the crime, set out to prove his innocence through old fashioned gumshoe detective work.
The strength of "Stirring up Strife" is in its strong plot, and while all of the characters have some relationship to it, we also feel they have their own lives. Stanley does an excellent job of balancing our introduction to these lives (such as Cooper's parents, various members of the Bible study group, etc.) and offering action and clues to solve the mystery. One of the best subplots is Cooper's second chance at love with a member of the Bible study group; we are cheering for her all the way. Stanley is also great at evoking the atmosphere of urban Richmond, Virginia, the setting for this series.
As many readers who are drawn to this book because of its church-ish theme could potentially be driven away by it. However, I can attest that Stanley does a really good job of balancing the faith/God/prayer themes without much syrupy sentimentality or even a drivel of preachy rhetoric. That is a much more difficult task to do than Stanley makes it seem. While the Bible quotations at the beginning of every chapter did seem to get a bit heavy at times (and the more orthodox among readers might object to their contextualization), I found myself always reading them and finding resonance in the chapter that followed. This is a rather bold move for commercial mass market fiction, but Stanley is up to the job.
My qualms with the book are minor but bear mentioning because I am seeing them as a trend in many cozies. I am of a personal mind that authors should stop writing "clucked" as a term of expressive action. I'm pretty sure people don't cluck, or even if they do it must be rarer than what we're reading in a lot of cozy mysteries these days (maybe the tsk tsk??). I'm also not a fan of characters who refer to their vehicles with made-up cutesy proper names based on the vehicles size and/or color (here there are two, "Cherry-O" and "Sweet Pea," and you can probably guess one is red and the other, yep, green). It kind of removed me from the story every time I came across those things, clucked and proper-named autos. I would also lose Quinton's hymn lyrics, which as printed in full within the text read like doggerel even though they would be extremely appropriate set to the right music in a church environment.
These small annoyances, which may well be just my own hangups anyway, do not detract from this excellent first entry into the Hope Street Church Mystery Series. The solid and believable finish is as satisfying as what came before it, one mark of a good mystery. I will look forward to the next book, "Path of the Wicked" with anticipation.
Ellery Adams's Hope Street Church Mystery series is a top rated series if this book is what the others are like. I've not read any of the others in this series but am sure this won't be true long. The main character has been portrayed with such believability that I was able to identify with her. The others in this book were easy to believe that I wished I was able to join them. Although there are earlier books I could enjoy this book as a stand alone.
When I saw this was about a church, I groaned inwardly, but I didn't need to. No Christian message or twisting facts to fit the message, but the kindly Christian outlook of the participants at the Hope Street Bible study group was enough of a "witness to the faith" if that is what the author wanted. It was a good story, well told. The characters were real - quite a motley collection - and were sympathetically drawn, but there was no sentimentality of any sort. The mystery was good, and no one would have guessed who the perpetrator was, and the romantic interest was carefully done and very real. A thoroughly good read.
I like reading cozy mystery books. This one is definitely a good, light read that is clean, but with human faults included. It highlights how there is also hope and restoration even after something bad happens. I thought the mystery part was the bonus thrown in. It also showed how much we all need friends, family, faith, and hope! And a lot of times a new start!
Great beginning to a series that has just been revamped and republished by Ellery Adams. As the series suggests, the story revolves around a study group at Hope Street Church. However, the story line and messages are not "churchy" at all. Throughout the book, a message of hope pervades, as the members of the group all have their problems and work together, not only to solve the murder of one of their members, but each other.
A new beginning is in order for our main character Cooper Lee. Dumped by her boyfriend of 5 years, living over her parent's garage and feeling at the bottom of a barrel, she accepts the invitation of a client to attend a bible study group at her client's church. Unfortunately, the client is murdered and the group finds out at Cooper's first meeting. A very diverse set of very well written characters are introduced, and they all apply their own skill sets to unravel the mystery.
A terrific addition is the set of recipes at the end of the book. Cooper's mother is a baker, supplying her special cookies to a number of restaurants in Richmond. By the tine I finished the book, I was ready to head out to see if there were any in this area!
Great writing, great characters, great plot and a great message. And cookies! What more could a person want!
